EPA's new Renovation, Repair & Painting (RRP) Rule
Under strict new EPA rules that take effect on April
22, 2010, certification is required for all home improvement activity in housing units built before 1978 or in
ANY child-occupied building or facility. The new rules focus on activity such as renovation or remodeling that
disturbs more than 6 square feet of interior or 20 square feet of exterior lead paint. The EPA's new Renovation,
Repair & Painting (RRP) Rule will require most contractors working in pre-1978 homes to complete an 8 hr. course in lead-safe work
practices.

Lead paint isn't always dangerous. If it's under multiple layers of newer, non-lead paint, you may not have a
serious problem. The time to be concerned is when lead paint is disturbed - by sanding, grinding, rubbing, bumping,
water damage, or during renovation - does it release small particles of lead dust that can harm you.
