Sulfur Compounds in Drywall Causing Odors and Copper Corrosion in Homes
The latest news in the State of Florida is that there are some Florida homes that are having a
problem with blackening of copper pipes and wiring. It seems to be connected with the importation of Chinese
Drywall after the shortage due the Hurricanes of 2004 thru 2007. Ii is also causing the A/C Units to fail due
to corrosion of the coils which can cause pinholes in the coils. There can be a sulfur like
odor in the area of the drywall or in the air of the home.
Some individuals are experiencing symptoms such as headaches and nausea in the homes. Not everyone is
experiencing the physical symptoms when the sulfur odor is present. We have one client whose Asthma
symptoms immediately become worse in the presence of the sulfur compounds odor. They had Chinese drywall
installed after Hurricane Wilma. Her symptoms got better when drywall was removed in room.
Chinese Drywall
The homes that are experiencing an Air Conditioning coil breakdown due to the corrosive effect of the
sulfur in the air can have another serious problem. The sulfur in the air causes a chemical change on the
coils, which then causes the pinholes. These pinholes can then release the Air Condirioning refrigerent gas
into the air of the home. This does not happen in all cases. Check with you A/C Contractor to see if it is
happening in your case.
This problem can be traced back to the multiple Hurricanes of recent years that caused a
severe shortage of drywall in the State of Florida. At that time, there was an increased importation of
Chinese manufactured drywall that has been shown to have elevated levels of sulfur compounds which are
released when tested by a lab.
Safe Homes will help you solve your Chinese Drywall and Sulfur Odor problems by doing the
