Paint Allergies

Paint allergy can be a serious problem for someone who has this problem. Your home was just painted and you cannot stay in the area. This was you safe place and not you cannot tolerate your own home. The problem being that new paint can be found everywhere around you. This will happen during your entire life. It will be at your workplace, restaurants, college dorm, shopping malls and basically every wall around you. A person will react and have paint allergies when you breathe in the strong vapors from the new paint. This can also happen if you touch a wet surface of paint.

As you probably already known that all paints produce odors. These odors are chemical in nature in the air. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are found in most oil-based household paints. Water based paints also have odors but are not as toxic as oil-based paints. It is important to avoid inhalation of the odors and no direct skin contact is important.

When you are exposed to the vapors of paint that have VOC’s, this can result in an allergic reaction in the respiratory system. Touching wet paint can have the same reaction as breathing in the fumes of paint. Paint Allergy is very common in today’s world of chemicals.

Paint Allergy Symptoms

If you are have a paint allergy reaction, you can have a runny nose, sore throat, coughing and  nose or nasal congestion. These symptoms are common, along with irritated and runny eyes. On the other hand, people who experience reactions from direct contact can have a redness at the location or irritation at the site of paint contact.

How to Treat Paint Allergy

If you want to paint your house, find a non-toxic paint that has no or low VOC’s in it. Sherwin Williams has their “Harmony” which we have personally used with good results. If you have a Paint Allergy, hire someone to paint your house. When they paint, have the windows open to allow the fumes to ventilate to the outside till it dries. Do not paint yourself or you could have an allergic reaction due to over inhalation of the fumes in the paint. Remember, it is not the substance but the amount of exposure that can be the trigger.
